What is COMPES?

The Coalition of Minority Professional Engineers (COMPES) was formed in 2000 as an initiative between the NSBE, SHPE, and SWE Detroit sections. The goal of this partnership is to strengthen and build each other up to better reach each individual society's goals.

SHPE Mission Statement 

Changing lives in Detroit by inspiring and motivating young Hispanic students to achieve educational excellence in STEM fields through mentoring and community presence; as well as enhancing career opportunities for Hispanics by providing a strong professional network.
 

SWE Mission Statement

The Society of Women Engineers stimulates women to achieve their full potential in careers as engineers and leaders, expands the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in improving the quality of life, and demonstrates the value of diversity.

Thinking in Pictures: Empowering your presentations

Speaker: Christine Cabrera

As engineers, we spend a lot of time creating presentations to describe and status issues, roll-out processes, train new employees, and [insert your reason here]. We are often creating and viewing presentations with very text-heavy content, which hinders our ability to comprehend the message, make a decision, or stay awake! This session will pull in fundamentals from photography, graphic design, and even comic books(!) to help you more effectively translate your message into impactful visuals. No artistic skill needed – we will focus on fundamentals and exercises to train your brain to start thinking in pictures!

This panel will discuss the journeys of people who are in management positions and still hone their technical edge. Learn how they do it and here them share tips and tricks of the trade.

How to stay technically savvy while in management

Patents: How to navigate your company's process

Speaker: Irina Sullivan

Do you consider yourself an inventor? Do you know your company's invention disclosure submission process? Innovation process can be extraordinarily rewarding and can greatly benefit your career, so if brainstorming solutions is not a part of your daily routine you may be missing out on ways to stand out among your peers. Come and learn about patents and other forms of intellectual property, what they protect and how. Get insider tips on preparing a comprehensive invention disclosure, how to navigate your company's submission process, and what to do if at first you do not succeed. Finally, practice writing your very own patent claim for a common household object!

Focus will be on how to identify anxiety, triggers, and how anxiety acts as an inhibitor to productivity in the workplace. Participants will walk away with tools that can be used when they are feeling anxious.

Learn the field-proven techniques to accelerate your success when transitioning into a new role.
